West Auckland’s Clint Cunningham has overcome adversity to secure third place in the Geartech Central Region Rally Series at the final round, the Tomoana Warehousing Rally Hawkes Bay, over the weekend.
Cunningham came into the event looking to secure a top result in the series to finish a tough season on a high note, but disaster struck on the opening stage when a burst brake line meant he could only record the 24th fastest time.
With the team able to repair the car after the opening stage, Cunningham and new co-driver Kieran Anstis were able to set a string of top ten stage times and by the end of the fourth special stage, the pair had charged back to eighth place.
A fifth fastest time in stage five saw Cunningham jump another two spots to move into sixth place before the afternoon tarmac stages, a positon he would hold to the end, including the second fastest time over the final special stage.
More importantly, the result secured Cunningham third place in the Central Region Rally Series.
“It was a tough start to the day, but there is nothing quite like a fight back and at the end of the day we got a pretty good result,” said Cunningham. “It was a great way to round out the season and it’s great to give all of our sponsors and supporters a result for the season.”
Cunningham and his team now move their focus towards the 2016 season where they aim to return bigger and better.
