Queenstown’s Mike Sheehan is gearing up for a busy week of rallying, starting this weekend with the Catlins Coast Rally and finishing at the other end of the country in Whitianga for the Hyundai New Zealand Goldrush Rally Coromandel.
Chasing the MRF Mainland Rally Series Class B as well as the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship NZ Two-wheel drive class means the busy schedule for Sheehan.
The Catlins Coast Rally was Sheehan’s debut event in 2016 and since then he has enjoyed a rapid progression through the sport, wrapping up Class B in the Mainland Series last year and stepping up to the national championship in 2018 as well as defending his championship.
After successfully pairing together for the first time at the recent Rally Nelson, Sheehan will team up again with Janey Blair for the Balclutha-based event, which represents a home rally for both.
“It’s going to be a huge week or so of rallying coming up and we’ll be covering plenty of miles, but it will be an epic adventure and I can’t wait for it to get underway,” says Sheehan. “Going back to Catlins, the first rally I will have done three times, gives me a lot of confidence and having Janey in the passenger seat will be great, we have a lot of fun in the car.”
The Catlins Coast Rally takes place on August 11, with the event kicking off in Owaka from 10am. Teams will cover more than 146 kilometres of special stages before returning to Owaka from 3:45pm.
