An historic first day of S5000 practice action has unfolded at Sandown Raceway today, with Tim Macrow and Rubens Barrichello leading the way.
Melbourne-based driver Macrow, who completed the majority of the test and development work on the S5000 car over the past 10 months, topped both the first and second session.
Barrichello was sixth in Practice 1, but bounded up the order in the second session, recording the second fastest time and proving he has lost none of the speed that helped him create a long-standing career in Formula 1.
John Martin was also one of the leading drivers, finishing fourth and third in the two sessions.
The day was largely void of any dramas – a credit to Garry Rogers Motorpsort who have designed and manufactured the majority of the components for the all-new wings and slicks class.
Qualifying will be held tomorrow morning, followed by the opening Qualifying Race in the afternoon, broadcast on SBS and live streamed around the world.
