McElrea holds 2nd in USF2000 Series

Kiwi driver Hunter McElrea still holds second overall in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship despite a difficult time at the latest race held at the Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis.

In qualifying for his first oval track race, McElrea had set the fastest time on his first lap but then touched the wall on his second.

Having to start the race from 19th position, the Australian based Kiwi made his way through the pack to finish 11th.

Australian Cameron Shields started second, took the lead by holding on around the outside at the start and proceeded to lead throughout the 75-lap race around the 0.686-mile oval. His first win also ensured a maiden PFC Award for Newman Wachs Racing.

Next stop for the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship will be a pair of races alongside both the NTT IndyCar Series and the top rung on the Road to Indy, Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires, at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., on June 22-23.
