The meaning behind GAZOO

Toyota Racing has now become Toyota GAZOO Racing New Zealand with the launch of the new FT60, the chassis that will be used in the 2020 Castrol Toyota Racing Series. The word ‘GAZOO’ is currently used with the Toyota World Endurance Championship Team – Toyota GAZOO Racing, as well as their rally team – TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team.

So where does the term ‘GAZOO’ come from?

GAZOO reders to the word ‘Garage’ with the meaning of it being an intimate place where people work together to improve the smallest detail. The aim is to deliver better cars and services for each customer, at each garage. It is not just about racing, it is about Toyota cars and their owners.

Toyota GAZOO Racing embodies this spirit at the race track.

They say that the origin of the name came from the creation of the website GAZOO.com. This was over 20 years ago when the website had images of vehicles available for sale at each of the dealerships.

Think back 20 years to the internet at the change of the century which would have been dial-up and not broadband. GAZOO.com would have been quite a radical approach when the internet was in its infancy.

As Mark Whittaker, Toyota GAZOO Racing New Zealand Manager says, “It aligns us with the idea around the world with GAZOO. It’s good for us as we will get recognised world-wide within that umbrella.”

The current Castrol Toyota Racing Series name will, however, remain the same.
