Local MacDnald shows plenty of pace at Teretonga

Young Invercargill driver Liam MacDonald showed plenty of pace and skill during Round 5 of the BNT NZ Touring Car Series at Teretonga Park in Invercargill this weekend.

Luck ultimately did not favour him and the results may not have been what the 18-year-old Southlander would have wanted but he certainly showed plenty of speed plus the ability to pass cars throughout the round.

MacDonald qualified second fastest on Saturday and then led all the way to cross the line first in the rain in Saturday’s opening race only to receive a penalty which dropped him to fifth in the final results. The track was dry on Sunday morning for the reverse grid race and MacDonald challenged for lead early.

He dropped down the order after a safety car period but worked his way through the field back to second place. He entered the last lap pressuring leader Brad Lathrope of Auckland but was held up when he came to a halt to avoid Lathrope when he spun, allowing two cars to get past leaving him third at the finish. In the final race the GT Radial/Discount Tyres Ford Falcon lost third gear early before the gearbox failed, leaving Liam a non finisher.

While invariably disappointed with the results Liam was certainly pleased with the pace and potential shown in front of a huge crowd at his home track.
