Kiwis yet to win the British Grand Prix

Kiwi drivers have stood on the podium of the British Formula One Grand Prix nine times but have yet to win this iconic race.  We don’t anticipate that ‘record’ to change as Racing Bulls Liam Lawson lines up for the first time on the Silverstone grid this weekend.

The realistic expectation is for him to finish, do his best and preferably score some points.  It’s too early in his fledging F1 career to expect more and last weekend’s Austria Grand Prix showed that the Racing Bull car is no match for the McLarens, Ferrari, Mercedes and Verstappen’s Red Bull.

The battle for Racing Bull is about the best of the rest, for mid-pack honours.  It is the Constructor’s Championship that the teams are interested in.  This literally determines their income for the next season.

McLaren (417-points), Ferrari (210), Mercedes (209) and Red Bull (162) are head and shoulders above the rest of the manufacturers.  Fifth are Williams (55-points) followed by Racing Bulls (36), Haas F1 team (29), Aston Martin Racing (28), Sauber (26) with Alpine (11) in last place.

We are at an interesting stage of the 2025 season with four teams within ten points of each other.  Sauber is on a resurgence having scored 20 of their total in the last three Grand Prix.

“It’s one of the most well-suited tracks to Formula One and I’ve been lucky enough to test an F1 car around it,” said Lawson.  To be racing for the first time here this weekend is very exciting and the atmosphere at Silverstone is incredible with the amount of fans that come out for the race.”

Denny Hulme stood on the podium four times (1966, 1967, 1970, 1973), Bruce McLaren three times (1959, 1962, 1969) and Chris Amon twice (1967, 1968).  It was 1967, the year Denny Hulme became the F1 World Champion, that he finished second in a Brabham -Repco to Jim Clark (Lotus-Ford) with Amon in third for Ferrari.
