The Formula 1600 category in NZ is having one of its most successful season’s for sometime with large grids and competitive racing throughout the field.
There have been a number of proposed changes to the category that have been widely debated. At the last round at Teretonga Park in January a meeting between Motorsport NZ and the South Island Formula Ford Club (current organisers of both the South Island and New Zealand Formula 1600 Championship) took place.
The following was agreed with the intention to provide clarity and ease of process:
“All technical proposals will, in the first instance, be referred to the South Island Formula Ford Club committee, who will refer the matter to the Technical subcommittee for their consideration and recommendations. These recommendations will in turn be referred back to the South Island Formula Ford Club committee. The committee will, having satisfied itself of the robustness of the recommendations, and not before, forward those recommendations to Motorsport New Zealand. If necessary the subcommittee may subsequently communicate directly with Motorsport New Zealand, but any conclusion is to be approved by the South Island Formula Ford Club committee prior to implementation. The integrity of this process is to be respected.”
It is now hoped that we will see the category participating in more Tier One / Speedworks rounds next season. The national series now has two rounds in the North Island and already the size of entries is looking promising.
