‘Know when to hold or fold’ – Feeney’s mistake

Was Broc Feeney’s Achilles heel exposed in the opening laps of the final Race 34 of the 2025 Repco Supercars Championship.  Starting from the front row, Feeney was in the box seat to control the outcome of his three title rivals behind him.  However, contact with rival Chaz Mostert’s teammate, Ryan Wood, resulting in his dropping down the field could have been avoided.

Was Feeney’s mistake, and ultimate weakness, his taking on and not allowing a hard-charging Wood through?  What if Feeney had moved over and let Wood through, would the outcome of both the race and title fight have been different?

This is the problem with this new ‘Finals’ introduced by Supercars for the 2025 season.  It is no longer required to be the best at each and every round.  The strategy is now to make it through to the playoffs and then get through to the final four.  What you have achieved over the season no longer matters.  You don’t have to be the best, just the best on the final weekend.

Mostert is a worthy champion.  Not only is he quick, but he also has the experience and demeaner of a title holder.  And, he and his Walkinshaw United Team played the new rules to make sure he had the best shot at winning the title.

We now head towards 2026 with some unanswered questions.

Did we get the four best 2025 drivers into the final round showdown?

How do you reward a driver for his 19 pole positions, eight fastest laps and 14 wins over 34 Repco Supercars Championship races? Kudos to Broc Feeney.
