THERE is probably little more I can add to what has already been written about what could happen this weekend in Newcastle, but I noted something interesting in a FOX Sports promo while writing my column this week.
“It’s Kiwi versus Kiwi,” the voice over guy said. “Ford versus Holden,” he added. “Three against one…”
The three I get – Shane van Gisbergen has immense backup in two of the greatest ever in Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup, but the last time I looked there were two in the Shell V-Power bunker.
On reflection, though, the promo raises the point that it really has felt like McLaughlin is flying a lone hand against the Holden trio in this championship fight.
So without going into who I think will or will not win this weekend, I will say this: the performance of Car 12 this weekend may well be the most critical of the entire show.
If Fabian Coulthard and his engineers can drag themselves out of the mire they have been in lately and play rear-gunner to McLaughlin’s 17, then the odds swing in his favour.
If not, the FOX Sports promo may well be very accurate in how this epic title decider may unfold.
