Kiwi race driver Angus Fogg continued his winning form in the Touring Car Masters (TCM) class at Bathurst, winning the third six-lap sprint on Saturday and taking the on-track win in Sunday’s trans-Tasman showdown.
The two victories in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 support category follow Fogg’s win in the second six-lap sprint on Friday in the stunning J. A. Russell Ltd Mustang that he built and engineers himself.
The Riverhead-based driver added another milestone on Sunday setting the quickest lap time among the 16 invited Kiwi muscle car competitors.
“It couldn’t get much better!” said Fogg. “We qualified well, nearly won the first race, and won three races! First Kiwi home and the car’s been magic too.”
“Saturday’s race was a bit of a tussle, passed by Adam Bressington in his Camaro but managed to get by him up the straight, Ryal Harris overtook me going into Forest Elbow, but again, I got him back. A good battle in cloudy, cool conditions. The Australian and New Zealand cars are quite similar, but we do have an advantage in engine/power, so while it’s not easy to pass them going down the straight, the power helped.”

Sunday’s trans-Tasman challenge saw Australian and Kiwi competitors lined up on the grid with the fastest qualifier from each country on the front row, Australia down one side, New Zealand down the other. Each country’s top 15 finishers were allocated points and a country tally added up. With only 15 New Zealanders in the 39-strong grid and some of them not finishing, Australia took the overall win with their top 15 accruing the biggest total.
“But the Kiwis cleaned up on the track with myself, Hugh Gardiner and Andrew Anderson finishing one-two-three,” says Fogg. “Great conditions, warmer track and blue skies, but a few crashes – luckily the Kiwis came through unscathed, but a few mechanical issues. Our car was brilliant, very fast with the new lap record. Hugh was very fast today, he was coming at me at the end. We did a form finish across line which was a bit of fun.”
“Our crew’s worked seamlessly, so big thanks to them. A couple of them haven’t been to Bathurst, so we’re heading out now to get amongst it and enjoy the big race. It’s been great to also have a couple of our sponsors here with their guests. All in all, a great weekend!”
Fogg’s next outing is in the Central Muscle Cars’ second round at Manfeild 18-20 October. The J. A. Russell Ltd Mustang will still be on its way home from Bathurst so he’s running another car for this event.
