Having qualified fifth for the opening DTM Series race at the Lauzitzring, Liam Lawson has finished in second place. Philip Ellis (Mercedes-AMG Team WINWARD) came out on top against Lawson (Red Bull Ferrari AF Corse), the winner of the season opener.
“It’s better than what we expected after qualifying this morning,” commented Lawson. “I wasn’t really sure how the race pace would be. The guys did a really good pitstop, like in Monza, which makes gives us a really good opportunity to jump other cars when they stop.
“From there our race pace was good, maybe lacking a bit of straight line speed so over taking and defending can be difficult. Some good points today and really looking forward to the second race tomorrow.
As the best-placed Audi driver, ex-champion Mike Rockenfeller managed to end up on the podium by finishing up third with the ABT Sportsline Audi. Rockenfeller’s teammate Kelvin van der Linde (RSA) was classified fourth, defending his lead in the points’ standings from Lawson prior to the final race of the second round on Sunday.
The Saturday race ended with an unusually high attrition rate of six cars including four Mercedes. The fourth race of the season, getting underway tomorrow at 1.30pm local time (11:30pm Sunday NZ time).
