Brendon Leitch’s Leipert Motorsport team have won their class and finished 14th overall in the 23rd running of the Hankook 24H BARCELONA. Driving the #710 Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo, Leitch, along with team mates Kerong Li/Jean-Francois Brunot/Gerhard Watzinger/Gregg Gorski battled collision damage and race-long brake issues to take the GTX class victory in Barcelona.
“Massive thank you to my teammates and team for bringing me in,” commented Leitch. “You all drove superbly and couldn’t be happier to join the squad!”
The Leipert Motorsport team finished ahead of title rival RD Signs – Siauliai Racing team (#720, Audrius Butkevicius/Nicola Michelon/Paulius Paskevicius/Arturs Batraks/Alfredo Hernandez) which also ran a Huracán Super Trofeo.
The team run into problems in the opening lap of the race when Gerhard Watzinger was hit hard at the rear by a rival and consequently pushed into a competitor. Fortunately, Watzinger was able to make it back to the pits for the necessary repairs to be completed, losing up to 10-minutes to their rivals.
Resuming the race in 44th place, Leitch and his team mates played catch up taking over the lead in their GTX class by the halfway point which they held to the chequered flag and 14th overall.
“A fantastic race in Barcelona,” said Marcel Leipert, Leipert Managing Director. “After the accident on the first lap, we initially feared that we would have been eliminated from the title race early. But the team did an excellent job in the pits and after the relatively short repair time, the car ran perfectly.
“All the drivers did an outstanding job. We won the first two championships of the 2022 season. Now we also want to win the remaining two titles of the 24h Series in Kuwait.”
The team have secured the European Championship title in the GTX class (team classification) with drivers Brunot/Li first overall in the drivers’ standings.
The next appearance for Leipert Motorsport will take place again at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (Spain, 30.09.-02.10.). There, the team will compete in the FANATEC GT World Challenge Endurance with the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo.
