Ragginger wins in Sepang and takes lead in Carrera Cup Asia

Kiwi driver Chris van der Drift headed into the latest round of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia with a slender one point lead as drivers and teams competed at the Sepang International Circuit as part of the support classes for the Malaysian F1 Grand Prix weekend. Finishing third has seen the Kiwi slip to four points behind new leader Martin Ragginger who won the single race of the weekend from Kiwi driver Will Bamber.

What started as a slow race due to torrential rains transformed into an epic fight for the front with some of the most relentless charges seen yet this season. As the safety car retired after the third lap, the grid became a battleground that never settled, and in the end the championship lead changed hands in both classes.

Will Bamber was the first to capitalise, overtaking van der Drift for third in lap 4. Ragginger soon took the lead, a position he never gave up through to the chequered flag. Two laps later, Bamber followed in second second, with van der Drift third. The three championship front runners stayed in that formation through the finish, climbing the podium with Ragginger in 1st, Bamber in 2nd and van der Drift in 3rd.

Bamber sits third on the points table (188 points) just 19 points adrift of Ragginger while former Toyota Racing SEries winner Andrew Tang of Singapore (152 points) is fourth.

With his victory Ragginger has surpassed van der Drift at the top of the series heading into the season finale in Shanghai, China.
