Auckland Club Series wraps up with a few surprises

As has been seen over the past few seasons, the double-points finale for the AMCC Club Series always throws up a few surprises, and this year was no exception when the Series wrapped-up last Sunday on the 1.2 Km Club Circuit at Hampton Downs.

Having their first run on Hampton Downs, the Bucket racers had the biggest smiles on the day – the small capacity racers ideally suited to the Club Circuit – with a number of riders lapping in the 43 second region; only marginally slower than the quickest 250 Production bikes.

In the traditional categories, Club Series titles were decided across all classes.

Daniel Mettam capped a very successful National campaign with the Formula 1 Club title – riding the RCM Suzuki GSX-R1000 to a new circuit record for motorcycles of 36.891 seconds; this being some one second faster that Nathanael Diprose had turned at Round Two, earlier in the season on a 600 Suzuki.

Diprose took out the Formula 2 title, with Aderino Sugiarto improving all summer and chasing the Huia rider at every round.

Adrian Clare made a late season charge – and benefitted from the double-points final round – to secure the Super Stock 1000 Club title.

Formula 3 belonged to Nathan Jane, although Gavin Veltmeyer did secure a second win against the flying GSX-R450 Suzuki at the final round – and leapt past Nick Olson in the process – to secure second in the Series.

There were four different winners in Pro Twin 650 over the season, but Michael Cross demonstrated the consistency necessary to take out the title. Thirty-eight points up on Josh Augustine, who won all eight races that he had contested – interestingly all on the Club circuit !

The biggest surprise however was Jacob Stroud. Out for a run on the Hyosung NZ X4R in both the Hyosung Cup and 250 Production races – the former National Superlite Champion used his deft skills to take full advantage of the double-points on offer.

In the Hyosung Cup he managed to eclipse class pace-setter Nathanael Diprose, and secured three wins to propel himself to 5th in the overall points standing, having competed at just this round.

And then going on to do similar in 250 Production, with a further three podium finishes – including two wins – to jump up to 4th in the overall points for that title.

Diprose would secure the Carl Cox Motorsport Hyosung Cup over Gavin Veltmeyer, while Nick Burke was a model of consistency to secure the 250 Production title, with one win and a further eight podium finishes over the season. He also finished 3rd overall in the Hyosung Cup.

Post Classic and 125GP classes rounded out the titles decided, in a full season of competition that experimented with a new format – mixing the National and Club circuits to add a bit of variety.
