BMW E36-mounted Class 1 front-runners, Team Mag Motorsport’s Garry Cammock and Michael Jane claimed line honours in both the 3 and 6 Hr endurance races at the second round of this year’s NaZCAR Pro Series at the Taupo International Motorsport Park on Saturday.
However, there was a split result in the Index of Efficiency category with Team 24 Red Racing’s Class 3 Honda Civic of Chris O’Driscoll, Mathew Randell, Mike Shutes and Michael Satherley claiming the IoE gong in the 3 Hr race with an 88.66% score.
‘Normal service resumed,’ however, in the 6 Hr race standings, where emphatic first round winners Mal Chamberlain and David & Nathan Cox (Team Assassin Racing Class 4 Mazda 3) were back on top with 7th place overall and an IoE rating of 88.04%.
It was just as close and exciting in the traditional ‘first-past-the-post’ competition, particularly in the 3 Hr ‘race-within-a-race’ where, for instance, the Team Stickmen Racing Class 2 BMW E36 of Karl Gaines and Lance Gerlach ended up in second place, but still on the same lap (89) as the Class 1 car of Cammock & Jane.
In saying that the 6 Hour race turned into a real Cammock/Jane benefit, the pair ending up completing 179 laps, 3 more than the second placed BMW 318 ti of Team Super Mates Racing’s Reece Hendl-Cox, Lee Zeltwanger and Cullern Thorby (176) and 5 more than “Stickmen’ Karl Gaines and Lance Gerlach (174) who were 3rd .
As pioneered successfully in the NaZCAR organistion’s inaugural Pro Series last year, entrants this year were divided into four classes based on time ‘bands’- from Pro 1 (quickest) to Pro 4 (slowest).
The Taupo time bands started at 1:41.000 –1:44.999 (Pro 1) and went down to the 1:58.00 to 2:06.00 of the Pro 4 category.
Ironically because the forecast rain didn’t start falling until well into the evening on Saturday, both the 3 and 6 Hour races were conducted on a dry track and in virtually perfect conditions to go racing.
Unfortunately the conditions proved a little bit too good for some competitors, who received time penalties for ‘breaking out of’ (aka lapping quicker than) their pre-agreed-to time ‘bands.’
Team Assassin Racing was one of the squads worst affected by this good weather/time band breakout conundrum, Mazda 3 owner Mal Chamberlain and co-drivers David & Nathan Cox relegated to ‘also-ran’ status thanks to the time penalties added to the team’s final 3 Hr tally.
Lesson learned, albeit the hard way, the Team Assassin Racing trio literally went the extra mile to make sure they were in contention for overall 6 Hr race honours…which they were, finishing 7thoverall (up from 14th in the 3 Hr) and back on top of the Index of Efficiency standings having completed 162 laps for an IoE rating on 88.04%.
In the 3 Hr race which started concurrently with the 6 Hr at 11.00am and ran until 2.00pm, the Team 24 Red Racing Honda Civic of Chris O’Driscoll, Matthew Randel, Mike Shutes and Michael Satherley completed 86 laps (out of a theoretical possible total of 97) to finish 6th overall for an IoE rating of 88.66%.
The Team 24 Red Racing Civic, driven by Chris O’Driscoll, Matthew Randel, Mike Shutes and Michael Satherley, also finished an imressive 5thoverall and second in the 6 Hr. Index of Efficiency standings behind winners Team Assassin Racing’s Mal Chamberlain and David & Nathan Cox with an IoE rating of 85.13%.
Meanwhile after impressing pretty much everyone present at the opening round of this year’s NaZCAR Pro Series at Hampton Downs last month, much was expected from Team Super Mates Racing’s Reece Hendl-Cox, Lee Zeltwanger and Cullern Thorby and their Class 1 BMW 318ti Compact at the second round at Taupo.
The trio didn’t dissppoint either, claiming second spot on the podium in the 6 Hr. race just three laps down on the all-conquering Class 1 BMW E36 coupe of Garry Cammock and Michael Jane but two laps up on the Class 2 BMW E36 coupe of Karl Gaines and Lance Gerlach which was third.
Not a bad result, especially since earlier in the day the BMW Compact had been on the tray of a circuit recovery vehicle being returned to the pits minus its left rear wheel.
Fortunately, the problem was not as bad as those who witnessed the wheel parting way with the hub might first have thought. Certainly, not that many laps later, the BMW Compact was being driven back out onto the track…
All eyes now turn to the final round of this year’s NaZCAR Pro Series at Pukekohe Park Raceway, Pukekohe on Saturday August 20.
