Canterbury Car Club Inc. – Club Championship 2020/21 Halfway Update

Every year, every Canterbury Car Club member has the opportunity to win free entries. The winner of the annual Club Championship is given up to 15 event entries and a number of free garage rentals by scoring points in 20 of the more than 50 events run by the club from July 1 to June 30. Second place wins up to 10 and third wins up to 5 entries and each takes home a very nice trophy to remember their achievements.

The rules are simple. Compete in 4 different disciplines out of the 7 that are run over the year. Each has its own championship.

Navigation Rallies, 13 events, The Tony Booth Trophy – Best Overall Crew – Current leaders: Mark Wederell, Barry Higham & Chris Protheroe

Motorkhana, 12 events, G & M Fraser Gymkhana – Overall Champion, Current leader: Neil Gardner

Autocross, 7 events, The Allan Coker Trophy – Overall Champion – Current leader: John Rathgen

InterClub (incl Hillclimbs), 8 events, The CCC Interclub Speed Challenge Trophy – Current leader: No events in 2020

Speed – Dual Car Sprints, 12 events, The Jack Tench Memorial Cup – Overall Champion – Current leader: Peter Flewellen

Drift, 5 events, The CCC Drift Trophy – Overall Champion, Current leader: Sheldon Kneale

Race – Clubmans Saloons, 5 events, The Sharman Trophy – Overall Champion, Current leader: Terence Phillips

Race – Clubmans Classic Saloons 5 events, The Canterbury CC Classics Cup – Overall Champion, Current leader: Marcus Stewart

Race – Clubmans – Singleseaters, 5 events, Canterbury Motor Racing School Shield, Current leader: Insufficient entries

Race – Continental RennSport, 5 events, The RennSport Trophy, Current leader: TBA

Points for the best five results in each of the types of events are accumulated to be the Club Championship score, however, ONLY 20 scores count.

The lowest points are dropped off as better ones are earned ie: A win earns 30 points and if the worst points were a 10th placed 11 points, the 11 is dropped and the overall score increases by 19 points.

Currently, Peter Flewellen (Fraser/BMW Mini), winner for the last 3 seasons, has earned 326 points by competing in 18 of the 24 events run up to December 31st. Peter competes in Motorkhana, Autocross, Navigation Rally and excels with his Fraser in the Dual Car Sprints.

Second is Allan Coker (Gravel Express/Estima) on 198 points being hounded by John Rathgen (Pulsar GTi-R/Fiesta ST) with 195 points. Not too far away are Chris Protheroe (193) and Neil Gardner (174). A gaggle of Navigation Rally and Motorkhana competitors take up 12 of the next 13 places and have done 7 or less of the 24 events.

So, with at least 26 events remaining in the ClubSport calendar before the 30th June, there is still a chance that a new Club member could actually catch and pass Peter to have their name engraved on the A P Marryatt Trophy – Club Champion of Champions in 2021, the 56th running of this championship.
