More Clubsport success for MacDonald

Liam MacDonald of Invercargill maintained his lead in both the Motorkhana and Sprint Championships at the penultimate round of the Evolution Motorsport ClubSport Championship at Teretonga Park on Sunday.

MacDonald had won three of the four Motorkhana Championship rounds prior to this round and added another when he set the fastest time in his Nissan Pulsar on all three Motorkhana tests on Sunday morning. MacDonald took maximum points for his efforts with Josh Cooper in a Toyota Corolla second ahead of Andrew Kennedy in a Toyota Starlet with Craig Allan who went into the round second on points fourth in his Honda Prelude.

MacDonald made it a perfect day when he won the Autocross event in the afternoon giving him five from five for the season with just one round remaining. Josh Cooper was again second with Craig Allan third in his Nissan 180SX.

The arrival of more new faces to the championship continued when fourteen-year-old twin brothers, Ricky and Ajay Smith of Invercargill, debuted at a Southland Sports Car Club event sharing a Toyota Starlet in both the Motorkhana and Autocross, both improving their times throughout the day with Ajay taking bragging rights in the Motorkhana before Ricky reversed the order in the Autocross.

The next Southland Sports Car Club ClubSport event is a non-championship grass autocross at Kings property, Rakahouka on Sunday 13 February before the final round of the Evolution Motorsport ClubSport Championship back at Teretonga Park on Saturday 26 March.

A non-championship event will close the 2021/2022 season on Sunday 10 April.

Anyone contemplating having a go can either come to an event or alternatively attend an event to have a look at what the sport entails. For information on entry level ClubSport contact the Southland Sports Car Club ClubSport co-ordinator, Malcolm Mitchell at 021 666 956. Anyone twelve and over can have a go (youngsters need a parent or guardian consent) and for a small hire fee can use the Evolution Motorsport Nissan Sentra that is available.
