Urwin to defend national kartsport title this weekend

Jay Urwin from Matamata is gearing up to defend his title at the upcoming Kartsport New Zealand National Championships in Blenheim this weekend, March 29-31. Last year, at just 14 years old, Urwin dominated the KZ2 Shifter class becoming the youngest NZ kartsport champion in open competition.

In February, the 15-year-old delivered another commanding performance, winning the 2024 New Zealand Karting Grand Prix in Hamilton. He competed against some of New Zealand’s top KZ2 drivers, including Liam Lawson, Formula 1 Red Bull reserve driver.

Urwin’s most recent success came at the SuperKarts USA ProTour in Orlando, Florida, on 10 March where he won bronze competing against 26 of the most talented kart drivers from around the world.

Reflecting on his experience in the USA, “Orlando was a fantastic start to the season,” Urwin remarked. “Securing third place in the final was a significant improvement from last year, but as a competitor, you always strive for more. Racing alongside my new teammate and World Champion, Matheus Morgatto, was an incredible experience.”
