Rally star Molly proving she’s got what it takes

Australia’s fastest female rally driver, Molly Taylor, is currently featuring in a reality show on TV that is testing her limits of endurance.

The 2016 Australian Rally Champion is one of 17 celebrities participating in SAS Australia, a series of physical and psychological tests from an elite team of ex-Special Forces soldiers.

The series is now four episodes in, but what is already blatantly obvious is that rallying, and Molly, are way down on the list of the producer’s priorities.

Over the opening episodes Molly has rarely rated a mention, and even group shops usually have her obscured behind someone else.

Instead, ‘celebrities’ such as ‘drug runner’ Schapelle Corby, cricket ‘WAG’ Candice Warner, banned swimmer Shayna Jack, and ex-Miss Universe Australia, Erin McNaught, are taking most of the camera time.

That’s understandable from a purely entertainment perspective, as controversy in their past is making up much of the fluff that pads the show out.

The idea of the show is to push the contestants to their absolute limits, to the brink of physical and mental exhaustion, and already some have cracked, including Corby.

How long Molly Taylor lasts on the series will no doubt determine how much coverage she receives as the show continues.

One thing’s for certain though. She’s one tough customer.

How many of us could withstand three hours of physical torture in the middle of the night, stand for minutes on end with a heavy rock held above your head, or be forced into physical battles against rugby players, cricketers and professional athletes twice your size?

If nothing else, Molly Taylor’s participation in SAS Australia is proving that motorsport is not simply about sitting in a seat, pushing a few pedals and turning a wheel.

You need to be as mentally and physically fit as any other athlete, and be able to show a determination that mere mortals can only dream about.

Molly Taylor has all of that in spades.
