Shane van Gisbergen, along with co-driver Glen Weston, have won the Copthorne Bay of Island Far North Rally. They (Skoda Fabia R5) beat home Dylan Turner/Brianna Little (Audi S1 AP4) with Todd Bawden/Paul Burborough (Ford Fiesta R5 MkII) third.
Ben Hunt (Skoda Fabia Rally2) won the opening Waiare Special Stage 1 from van Gisbergen and Kingsley Jones (Skoda Fabia R5) with van Gisbergen then beating Hunt in the Kohumaru SS2, taking the rally lead by six-seconds.
Both Hunt and Raana Horan (Skoda Fabia Rally2) ran into problems in Special Stage 3 that saw them officially redraw from the rally and later rejoin. Van Gisbergen won and increased his lead over Turner by nearly a minute.
Having won Special Stage 4, van Gisbergen finished second to Hunt in SS 5. The two were to swap stage wins for the rest of the one-day rally with Hunt winning SS7 and van Gisbergen SS6 and 8.
In the end van Gisbergen finished with a 2min 20 second lead over Dylan Turner with Bawden third, Jones fourth and David Sievers (Subaru WRX) fifth.
