Kiwi drivers Marcus Armstrong and Liam Lawson are back in action this weekend in the FIA Formula 2 Championship as a support category for the British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone in the UK. The seventh round marks the halfway point of the season with Armstrong having his best F2 season, sitting in sixth overall while Lawson, currently 10th, is looking to improve.
“Silverstone, it’s a place I like a lot,” commented Lawson. “It’s got a lot of history, a famous track and it is a unique track. I remember my first test in Formula 3 days, it was a very exciting experience and I think that in a single seater this track is perfect. It’s such a great place to drive, new tyres, low fuel in Quali, really pushing the limits, that’s a great feeling.
“In terms of set-up, every team has got their own ideas and I have confidence that the Carlin guys will do a good job, we’ve been fast pretty much everywhere that we’ve been this year. The’ve given me a really good car and hopefully that will continue this weekend and we’ll put some really good points on the board, it’s about time.”
Current points leader, Felipe Drugovich, continued to build momentum in Barcelona, a fortnight ago. A podium in the Feature Race helped the MP Motorsport driver strengthen his hold on the top of the Drivers’ Championship, going 49-points clear of his nearest rival Théo Pourchaire. The Brazilian has finished in the top three in four of the last five rounds but has yet to do so at Silverstone previously.
Aiming to do the double this season, MP Motorsport leads the way with 154 points in the Team’s Standings. Two strong rounds for Daruvala and Dennis Hauger have helped PREMA Racing leapfrog ART Grand Prix into second on 128 points. It’s nip and tuck between Armstrong’s Hitech Grand Prix and Lawson’s Carlin, both separated by only three points heading into their home race weekend with Hitech just in front on 106 points.
