Marcus Armstrong will be fighting to extend his new lead in the highly competitive FIA Formula 3 European Championship this weekend. Zandvoort in the Netherlands hosts the fourth round of ten that has already seen seven different winners in the nine races completed so far. Armstrong has shown that he has what it takes in this championship, having finished five times on the podium, including his maiden F3 win at the last round in Germany.
Red Bull protégé Daniel Ticktum is just one point behind Armstrong with two race wins. The British driver has been touted by Red Bull Racing as a possible replacement for Scuderia Toro Rosso F1 driver Brendon Hartley in 2019. This appears to be just ‘PR speak’. Even if Ticktum wins the Euro F3 title, he will not have gained enough Super Licence points (40) now required to race in Formula One.
Third position currently is held by rookie Enaam Ahmed (Hitech Bullfrog GP), another proof of the competitiveness of this year’s rookies. With Armstrong and Ahmed, two of the drivers holding top-three positions are contesting their rookie season.
If Armstrong can continue to finish his F3 races, he will be the driver to beat.
