Armstrong salvages sixth at Nurburgring

Marcus Armstrong has shown his determination to fight back into contention in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship grid, recovering from a start position of 18th to finish sixth in the opening race of the weekend at the Germany.

At the 3.629 kilometres long Nürburgring sprint circuit, Mick Schumacher (PREMA Theodore Racing) scored his fourth race win of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season. The best-placed rookie driver Robert Shvartzman (PREMA Theodore Racing) and Daniel Ticktum took the chequered flag in second and third place respectively. Thus, Ticktum remains in the lead of the drivers’ standings from Schumacher, who moved up into second place.

Armstrong qualified eighth but was penalised ten grid places after his car needed a replacement engine after practice. He was one of several able to thread their way through some early race chaos including a six car spin.

Out front, Mick Schumacher, Robert Shvartzman and Dan Ticktum formed a three car freight train, making the most of the aerodynamic benefit of drafting several cars together. In the closing laps Ticktum tried repeatedly to break clear and overtake Shvartzman to attack Schumacher but was unable to do so.

Schumacher claimed victory from Shvartzman and Ticktum. Ahmed, Aron, Marcus Armstrong (PREMA Theodore Racing), Guanyu Zhou (PREMA Theodore Racing), Ben Hingeley (Hitech Bullfrog GP), Jonathan Aberdein (Motopark) and Keyvan Soori Andres (Van Amersfoort Racing) rounded out the top ten. There are two more races to run at the Nürburgring this weekend.
