The organising committee of Formula Open New Zealand (FONZ) say they’re on track for a bumper summer season of racing.

Kicking off in November at the MG Classic in Manfeild organisers are expecting upwards of 16 cars on the grid. Including the likes of Tom Alexander, defending champion Josh Donohue and the legend himself Kenny Smith.

With rounds in both the North and South Island’s, there are plenty of chances for people to see the ex TRS, Formula Renaults, Swifts and Formula Atlantic cars taking to the track.

Rounds include the MG Classic at Manfeild, the iconic Skope meeting at Ruapuna and the Mobil 1 Classic Speedfest at the legendary Teretonga track.

Category Manager John Tomlin is excited at what is to come. “We’re hopeful they’ll also be some guest appearances from drivers such as Brendon Leitch and Jacob Douglas but of course that’s dependant on MIQ spaces.

“It’s tough for the Toyota Raceing Series. The issues they are facing are largely out of their control. We’re pleased to see the NZGP will happen and we’re hopeful some of our series competitors like Tom Alexander and young Josh Donohue might step into this one off event as it doesn’t clash with any FONZ rounds which is great.

“In fact we’re keen to see our series offer a valid pathway, or feeder series, into the full TRS series. The ex-TRS FT-40’s and FT-50’s are earlier iterations of the current FT-60 so in many ways some of our racers are already getting experience in a similar car.”

With practice days, qualifying and three races over a weekend there is plenty of track time. A new points system and two categories of cars will help keep the competition tight throughout the field. It will be a wings and slicks festival like no other.

The only thing that stands in the way now is Covid-19 and lockdown restrictions. And it’s fair to say everyone has their fingers crossed that doesn’t happen this summer.
