The 2020 Super Formula season will finally get underway this weekend at the Twin Ring Motegi. Current title holder Nick Cassidy will look to carry on last seasons form, however all drivers will face a number of changes for the 2020 series due to the impact of the coronavirus.
This season, besides wet weather tyres, there will be only one tyre specification for all races with no mandatory tyre changes or re-fuelling during races. This will result in race being shortened with the opening race reduced to 35 laps or 1 hour 40 minutes in total if the race is red flagged at any stage.
No Friday practice session will take place this year with two practice sessions to take place on Saturdays. Qualifying and racing will take place on Sundays.
Also changed for 2020 are the allocation of championship points with the best five of seven rounds in qualifying and races counting.
Conditions for this weekend are expected to be hot and humid which will impact on the drivers’ management of tyres during the race. With the lack of pre-season testing, a test session will take place this Friday between 1-3pm.
