Christchurch’s Michael Collins will look to take his third South Island Formula 1600 Championship title as the final of six rounds takes place at Timaru International Raceway on Saturday. Collins has a narrow 12-point advantage over recent NZ F1600 title winner Liam Lawson from Pukekohe. However, Lawson is not expected to make the trip south, which will give more ‘breathing room’ to Collins from third placed Ethan Anderson. Anderson, winner of last season’s South Island title is 45 points adrift of Collins and 18 points ahead of fellow Southlander Jordon Michels in fourth place.
“It’s a bit of a shame that Liam (Lawson) is not coming down for the round,” commented Collins. “The plan for us is to finish every race and bag points as anything could happen on the day”
Collins has already twice won the title in 2014/15 and 2012/13. Anderson, currently second on the points table won the title last season and will look to take any advantage over the three race round. There are three different Classes competing for separate titles within the championship. Anderson currently leads Class 1 from Michels. Collins, in an older Van Diemen has a healthy 119-point advantage over Dyson Freeman with James Dicey in third in Class 2. In the historic Class 3, Roger McKenzie has a 111-point advantage over Graham Dickie with Andy downs in third.
Saturday’s racing includes practice, qualifying and three races.
