Double podium for Lawson at Hockenheim

Liam Lawson has twice finished second in the opening two races of the second round of the ADAC German Formula 4 Championship at Hockenheim in Germany and now lies fourth overall on the points table after finishing sixth in race 3 (more to follow). Having qualified P3 and P2 for the first two races, Lawson claimed his second podium of the season finishing second behind series leader Lirim Zendeli. He then went on to repeating the podium in the second race, again with Zendeli winning.

“The start to the first race was average, and then I had some problems on the first few laps,” commented Lawson. “We weren’t completely satisfied with my pace. The US guys were faster than us, so we had to make some changes to the car ahead of Race 2.”

Zendeli has won four of the first five races of the season. In race 1 he crossed the finish line ahead of Lawson (16, New Zealand, Van Amersfoort Racing) and Oliver Caldwell (15, United Kingdom, Prema Theodore Racing) third.

Zendeli again remained unchallenged in the second race during the afternoon and secured a lights-to-flag victory. Lawson took the runner-up spot once more. Frederik Vesti (16, Denmark, Van Amersfoort Racing) finished third and moved up to second place in the championship table following Enzo Fittipaldi’s (16, Brazil, Prema Theodore Racing), grandson of two-time Formula 1 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi, early retirement.

Mick Wishofer (18, Austria, US Racing – CHRS) rounded off his race weekend at the Hockenheimring in style with a maiden ADAC Formula 4 victory in race 3. Zendeli claimed the third spot on the podium behind rookie Niklas Krütten, adding a further 15 points to his championship tally. Charles Weerts (17, Belgium, Van Amersfoort Racing), guest starter Jack Doohan (15, Australia, Prema Theodore Racing), who is the son of five-time world motorcycling champion Mick Doohan, and Lawson finished behind the podium party.

Drivers and teams head to the next round at Lausitzring 18-20 May 2018.
