Hunter McElrea was able to continue his domination of the Australian National Formula Ford Championship, taking his 3rd
clean sweep of the year at the new Tailem Bend circut this weekend, for Round 5 of the series.
McElrea started the weekend ending Practice in 1st position, and was confident heading into qualifying. He was able to take his 5th straight front row performance placing his Eximm Sonic Mygale in 2nd position, only missing out on his 4th pole of the year by 0.01 of a second.
“Qualy was slightly disappointing, but still a great result,” commented McElrea. “I only missed Pole from my team mate getting a big slip stream, where I choose to try and do my lap by myself. However sometimes that is the way it goes and I am still in a great spot for the races!
McElrea was able to get the Race 1 win, by leading every lap, even with a little mistake on the last lap, meaning he had to pull off an impressive last lap pass to snatch back the lead and grab his 9th win of the year.
Hunter then went on to win both Race 2 and Race 3 streaking away from the field, to win by 3, then over 6 seconds respectively, and in the process also set the Lap Record, with an impressive 1:57.9095 lap time, a full 0.5 of a second quicker than any other driver.
”I am extremely happy to get my 3rd clean sweep of the year, and my eleventh Race win of the year. The team gave me an amazing car to drive and made my job easy! I had so much support as well from my family and friends who came to support me, so thank you very much to everyone who came out.” McElrea said.
This impressive performance from McElrea increased his lead in the Australian National Formula Ford Championship heading into the final two rounds at Phillip Island, and Sydney Motorsport Park. It has also put McElrea 7th on the Australian National Formula Ford all-time race winners list.
