A huge field of Formula Junior racing cars will be one of the highlights of this year’s Evolution Motorsport Classic SpeedFest at Teretonga Park from 17-19 February.
The cars were part of an exciting era of motorsport from 1958 until 1963, designed as a cost effective single seater racing car and a stepping stone to Formula 1. Production based engines of either 1000cc or 1100cc, depending on the weight of the car, with parts from production vehicles and strict rules on modifications saw the class thrive as more and more manufacturers became involved.
Drivers such as Jim Clark and John Surtees from the UK, Mexicans Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez, Lorenzo Bandini of Italy, South African Tony Maggs, Americans Timmy Mayer and Jim Hall and kiwi stars Denny Hulme and Howden Ganley, raced in the formula during it’s heyday.
Rising costs eventually ended the class as an option for drivers but nowadays Formula Junior has now become a very successful international historic category, due to the many cars and engines still available.
The cars come to Teretonga Park as part of their Diamond Jubilee Tour, which started in 2016, and has taken competitors to South Africa, Europe, Australia and now New Zealand with North America, the Baltic Sea area, more parts of Europe and parts of the Pacific region next on the schedule.
Drivers from the England, Scotland, Denmark, USA, Canada, South Africa, Australia and all corners of New Zealand will contest the Formula Junior races at SpeedFest in cars as diverse as Lotus, Brabham, Cooper, Lola, Autosud, Stanguellini and many more.
The Formula Junior cars will be part of an exciting weekend of classic motor racing with Historic Muscle Cars, Classic Saloons, Formula Libre, Historic Touring Cars, Sports Cars, Vintage Racing Cars plus the Noel McIntyre Drainage Clubmans Saloons on the programme of the 25th edition of SpeedFest.
