The 2019 Formula European Masters (FEM) series has been cancelled due to the lack of drivers. Formerly known as the FIA Formula 3 European Series, the 2019 championship was to have supported the DTM Series. Kiwi driver Liam Lawson had signed with German team Motopark to compete in the FEM but will now focus on the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Dutch team MP Motorsport.
“This is a really sad day for the European young-driver sport,” said Formel 3 Vermarktungs managing director Walter Mertes. Mertes company ran the German Formula 3 Championship, the F3 Euro Series of 2003-12, and the FIA F3 European Championship of 2013-18.
“In the difficult European competition environment there just aren’t enough drivers for the numerous different series.
“It takes enormous financial expenditure to compensate for this situation and we could not and did not want to expect this from our teams.”
It is reported that the series only had six drivers signed for the 2019 season.
Lawson will compete in the FIA F3 alongside fellow Kiwi Marcus Armstrong. FIA F3 was previously known as GP3. Armstrong finished runner-up in the 2018 FIA Formula 3 European Series to Mick Schumacher.
