Pukekohe’s Billy Frazer has won the opening race of the 2019/20 South Island Formula 1600 Championship’s fifth round at Highlands Park, Cromwell. Making a one-off appearance in the series, the national Formula Ford competitor also set the fastest lap in qualifying (1:44.966) ahead of current series leader Cameron Freeman (1:45.627).

It was Christchurch’s Bailey Paterson who got a great start from fourth on the grid to initially lead the 7-lap race from Frazer, Freeman and Noble-Adams. Frazer always had the speed and soon talk the lead and created a gap to second placed Paterson.

Paterson crossed the line for second only to be penalised for creeping on the start-line, dropping him back to fifth overall.

Sunday will see two more races before the series heads to Teretonga Park in Invercargill for the penultimate round.
