Hard work pays off for Murphy in Formula 4 US Champs

A podium in the final third race of the Formula 4 US Championship over the weekend was a result of hard work by Kiwi driver Ronan Murphy.  The second round of the F4 season was held at the Virginia International Raceway.

“Since the first round I’ve changed the way I prepared and approached the race weekend,” commented Murphy. “It was also really good because we were given more time on track which meant I had more time to learn it and make some changes to myself and the car that set us up a lot better for the weekend.”

Murphy qualified 20th in a field of 33 cars.

“Qualifying was still quite disappointing again after Round 1, but we were a lot closer than before, and I still believed that I had good race pace, so I was really looking forward to the races.”

The disappointment continued for Murphy in the first two races with a 24th and 15th placings.

“Race 1 and 2 weren’t great, even though they both could have potentially yielded points, due to mistakes I made.”

All was not lost with a great podium third place in the final race of the weekend.

“But I was really happy with the pace in both (race 1 and 2) as the car performed really well, and fortunately I managed to put in a lap quick enough to put me on P2 for the final race of the weekend and came home with the podium which was awesome.

“I was definitely a lot happier with the car over the weekend and definitely believe I can take it to the top few drivers, but again, it’s just going to come down to doing a better job in qualifying and getting near the front, to set myself up for the races going forward at the next few rounds.

“A massive thank you to everyone at Kiwi Motorsport for all their hard work and for giving me a strong car, and also a very special thanks to Hunter McElrea for coming to Virginia and for all his help, support and great advice over the weekend.
