IndyCars’ in NZ – you’re dreaming

The NZ Herald have for the second time run an article mooting the possibility of the Verizon IndyCar Series having a future round in New Zealand.

They first ran an article back in February (21) as part of an interview with Scott Dixon. ‘Pukekohe ‘would be really cool’: NZ IndyCar rumour gains traction’ Dixon was in favour of this, particularly as it would be a home event for him.

This has been followed up with an article 17 March titled ‘IndyCars in New Zealand is a pipe dream’ where Dale Budge is a bit more circumspect about the possibility.

The facts are, other than the long-standing Canadian round on the streets of Toronto, currently there are no rounds held outside the USA.

As Dixon points out, …” 90 percent of the sponsors are US based and most of them are only US based. It has to be financially viable for the teams where the sponsors don’t have to kick in… And the television side – the timing for a live race is off significantly for an audience over here.”
