New Zealand motorsport athlete, Faine Kahia, has announced his recent sponsorship signing with the Giltrap Group, joining an impressive list of Kiwi drivers to have benefitted from their support. Sir Colin Giltrap has been involved in motorsport since the mid-sixties and although a competitive racer, his passion really lay in supporting young New Zealand motoring talent, in the hope that they would make it in the “big time” overseas. Over the past 40 years, Sir Colin has been attributed as the main driver of New Zealand talent, including such household names as: Larry Perkins, Denny Hulme, Danny Sullivan, and more recently, Jim Richards, Earl Bamber, Brendon Hartley, Mitch and Simon Evans, Scott Dixon and Hayden Paddon.
“To join the Giltrap family of drivers is a hugely important milestone and one that means the world to me because of the high calibre of their drivers” says Kahia. “It will be an excellent opportunity for me to continue the success of the Giltrap brand abroad.”
This week Kahia heads to Malaysia to carry out testing in the brand new 2016 Renault Powered F4 car and hopes to impress the team and Renault Sport with good pace. “I’ll be working hard towards my goal of securing a spot in the Renault Sport Development Academy and it all starts here, whether testing or racing, every single opportunity on the track counts and I’ll be making the most of it.”
Off track, Kahia has been announced as a finalist for a 2016 Matariki Award in the Young Achievers category. Matariki Awards celebrate extraordinary Māori talent across a broad range of fields and industries. The annual event presented by Māori Television and Te Puni Kōkiri pays homage to the seven stars of Matariki, featuring seven award categories – which includes other finalists such as Cliff Curtis, Stan Walker and Lisa Carrington. The awards evening will be televised live from Auckland Museum on Sunday 26 June.
