In the German Formula 4 Championship, Pukekohe’s Liam Lawson (Van Amersfoort Racing) currently sits third overall with a chance of finishing runner-up after this weekend’s final round at the Hockenheim circuit in Germany. German driver Lirim Zendeli has already wrapped up the title but Lawson is fighting ex F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi’s grandson Enzo for second. Lawson will look to move up to Formula 3 in 2019 so will be conscious of at least making a good impression on prospective teams and backers.
Lawson is twelve points behind Fittipaldi after losing ground following a disappointing weekend at the Nürburgring but intends to regain second place.
“We had no idea what to expect when we headed over here but to have the Kiwi flag on the podium a few times this season has been great,” said Lawson. “Let’s hope I can see it hoisted a few more times this weekend.”
Team-mate Frederik Vesti (16, Denmark, Van Amersfoort Racing) – currently fourth with a 17-point deficit on Fittipaldi – also has ambitions of his own to claim the position of runner-up. “I’m well prepared and confident. I will give it my best shot at the weekend,” said the young Dane.
However, champion Zendeli also still intends to play his part in the action during this final race weekend of the season. “I definitely don’t intend to just sit back and enjoy my title. I now need to go out and help my team win the championship title,” he told us. Kerpen-based outfit US Racing CHRS are in first place in the team classification, 19 points ahead of Van Amersfoort Racing with drivers Lawson and Vesti. The season finale should prove to be extremely exciting for teams and drivers in the ADAC High-Speed Academy.
Drivers have two Qualifying sessions to set the grids for two races, while the third will be formed with the top eight finishers from Race 2 reversed and the rest of the field starting from their Race 2 finish position.
