Pukekohe racing driver Liam Lawson takes a comfortable lead into the final two rounds of the New Zealand F1600 championship.

Lawson was only been beaten once over the first nine races, and then he finished second.

The 14-year-old rookie has dominated the national series so far, and turned in outstanding performances in wet conditions.

The final race of the South Island part of the series was held in heavy rain conditions and Lawson streaked away from the rest of the field to win by over 24-seconds. His closest rival was lapping the circuit 2-seconds slower than Lawson during the race, while most drivers were over 4-seconds per lap slower.

Lawson started the season with three convincing wins in the wet at Timaru, scored three further wins in hot, dry conditions at Christchurch’s Ruapuna Park, and won a wet and a dry race at Teretonga Park, Invercargill.

“That would have to be the worst rain I’ve raced in. It was coming in horizontal,” he said.

With his closest championship rivals each striking trouble during the Teretonga round, Lawson has stretched his advantage out to 89-points heading into the final two race meetings.

The NZ F1600 championship uses Formula Ford single-seater race cars, which have been so important in the early careers of most top race car drivers for more than 40-years.

The penultimate round will be held at Taupo over Waitangi weekend, with the final three races a week later, as support for the New Zealand Grand Prix (February 10-12) at Manfeild, Feilding.

The winner of the New Zealand title will also have the opportunity to test in America for a $US200,000 supported drive in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda 2018,
