Lessons and learnings continue for McLennan in Round 2 at Teretonga

Australian Tom McLennan has continued his learning as he builds experience and confidence in the Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship.

In the second round of the FIA-recognised championship at Teretonga Park in Invercargill, McLennan showed speed over the weekend as he got to grips with the Formula Regional race cars – his first-ever season of high-powered open wheel competition.

“It was a weekend of ups and downs with wet and dry racing,” said McLennan. “I learnt a lot. I’m lacking a bit of qualifying pace, but I’m learning to lean on the car and the aero more through the corners.”

McLennan started the weekend in fast form, ending the session sixth in opening practice. An off in Friday’s second practice session didn’t rattle McLennan, setting himself up for an improved run on Saturday.

The 18-year-old Queenslander qualified 12th and finished 11th before making a flash start to a wet Race 2, only to be caught up in a lap one incident that ripped the front wing off his Kiwi Motorsport entry. The car was repaired and finished 12th.

“When it comes to a wet race or a race without much grip, we are definitely stronger.”

McLennan saved his best for last in the final race, claiming ninth place at the finish, equalling his best result in his short two-round Formula Regional Oceania Championship career.

“Thanks to Kiwi Motorsport for a great car and we are aiming to come back stronger for Round 3 at Manfeild next week.”

McLennan sits 11th in the title chase with three rounds of the quick-fire five round title remaining.

The third round of the Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Championship will take place at Manfeild at the Circuit Chris Amon this weekend, followed by the New Zealand Grand Prix at Hampton Downs and the final at Taupo.
