McElrea crowned Australian Formula Ford champ

Kiwi driver Hunter McElrea was crowned 2018 Australian Formula Ford Champion and the Australian representative in the 2018 Mazda Road to Indy 200K Scholarship Shootout after a closely fought final round at Sydney Motorsport Park over the weekend!

Heading into the last two races, McElrea was just four points ahead of Sonic Motor Racing Services team mate Hamish Ribartis.

McElrea struck back in penultimate rae to take the win by one-tenth of a second ahead of Ribarits and Nathan Herne Racing, extending his buffer to eight points in the championship with one race remaining.

Then in the final race of the season, McElrea and Ribarits clashed at turn two on lap three. McElrea was sent back to eighth as Ribarits maintained second behind Nathan Herne, who went on to score his long-awaited maiden national Formula Ford race win for BF Racing.

As a result, Ribarits received a post-race pit lane penalty (35 seconds) for a driving infringement, leaving McElrea to cross the line to win the championship by 15 points over Ribarits and Zac Soutar.
