McElrea wins at Queensland Raceway

Queensland based Kiwi driver Hunter McElrea again displayed that he has what it takes to win the Australian Formula Ford Championship last weekend at Round 2 of the Championship at Queensland Raceway. McElrea (#2 pictured) finished second for the round, having won the second race but then losing valuable points due to a post-race penalty at the end of Race 3.

“I’m very disappointed with race 3,” commented McElrea. “I believe I did everything that was needed to win the race and I was looking to execute the win which would have won me the Round, however due to a out of control driver it gets taken away from me, and to add extra salt to the wound I’m put back to 8th for doing nothing wrong. However the officials have a very difficult job, and you have to respect there decision”

His Sonic Motor Racing team mate Hamish Ribarits (#5 pictured) the round win, confirming his first round pace at Winton Raceway in Victoria. Ribarits claimed pole and went on to win the first and third races.

Both are now tied at the top of the leader board on 103 points each, 36 points ahead of third placed Liam McLellan. McElrea has four wins from six races while Ribartis has two.

Also competing across the Tasman was 2018 New Zealand Formula 1600 Champion, Callum Hedge. Making his Australian Formula Ford debut, Hedge joined the field in a Spectrum 014 finishing in the top ten for the round, a solid result considering the depth of competition this season.

Round 3 of the 2018 Australian Formula Ford Championship will be held at Wakefield Park May 25 -27.
