Behind the scenes with Kiwi Motorsport in the US, competing in the Formula 4 United States Championship, two young Kiwis have been on the spanners helping secure the team’s championship title. Ryan Yardley and Bailey Paterson are no strangers to single seater racing having competed for a number of years in the New Zealand Formula Ford scene.
Finally, both got the opportunity to compete in a wings and slicks car, taking part in the opening two rounds of the 2021 Formula Pro USA Championship Presented by ExclusiveAuctions.com Winter Series (Formula 4). Both tasted success with Yardley winning both races and Paterson finishing on the podium in second and third positions.
“I felt very comfortable jumping into the F4 car from the Formula Ford,” commented Paterson. “It was quite cool going from right foot braking in the Ford to left foot in the F4 car.
“My impression on racing in the US is its very tough close racing, very competitive and I was lucky enough to be with such a great team and having good teammates to learn of and share data with. That was all new to me so was very cool to learn.
“For racing experience on an international level and money wise I think it’s (US Formula 4) one of the best platforms in the world to be involved in as it is very competitive. To have a Kiwi team that has won the last three teams’ championship, it’s a no brainer.”
The Kiwi Motorsport trio of drivers was dominant all weekend sweeping the podium and awards during both days of Formula Pro USA F4 competition. On the Saturday, Yardley claimed the pole position, race win and fast lap award as teammates Joseph Daniele and Bailey Paterson pushed him to the end finishing second and third respectively.
On the second day (Sunday), it was once again Yardley who started from the pole position en route to his second win of the weekend, while Paterson and Daniele swapped the second and third positions with Paterson getting the best of his Kiwi Motorsport teammate. Paterson also scored the two bonus points for the fastest lap of the race, snatching a perfect points weekend from Yardley in the final on track sessions of the event.
