PREMA Theodore Racing’s Marcus Armstrong has finished second in the fifth race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship held at the Hungaroring in Budapest, Hungary. Having qualified fourth fastest for the race, the European based Christchurch teenager had already moved into second place after the first lap, behind pole sitter Enaam Ahmed (Hitech Bullfrog GP).
“My start was good and I was right behind Enaam at the beginning,” commented Armstrong “I was a bit surprised myself that I was so fast at this stage. Then, Enaam managed to pull a slight gap and closing up here is very difficult.”
Alex Palou (Hitech Bullfrog GP) finished in third. With his success, Ahmed also moved up into the lead of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship drivers’ standings after previous points’ leader Daniel Ticktum (Motopark) retired with brake failure.
At the opening race of the round on Saturday, Armstrong retired with a puncture after taking the race lead on lap one. Daniel Ticktum (Motopark) claimed his maiden victory ahead of Guanyu Zhou (PREMA Theodore Racing) and Robert Shvartzman (PREMA Theodore Racing).
Again in the third and final race of the weekend Armstrong retired after coming together with Ticktum fighting for the lead on the opening lap and damaging his suspension. Ahmed won the race from Ticktum.
Armstrong sits sixth on the leader board, 40 points behind Ahmed heading to the Norisring in three weeks time.
