Christchurch’s Marcus Armstrong has come away from the opening round of the FIA European Formula 3 Championship with a podium finish in the second race of the weekend. The Ferrari junior driver (PREMA Theodore Racing) finished third behind Frenchman Sacha Fenestraz (Carlin) with Alex Palou (Hitech Bullfrog GP) in second at the street circuit at Pau in the south of France.
“My start was okay, not particularly good, but not particularly bad either,” commented Armstrong. “In turn 1, I then managed to take fourth place. After Fabio crashed into the barriers and slid back onto the track, he almost collected me. From that point of view, I was lucky to be on the podium in the first place.”
Armstrong finished fifth in the opening race but collided in the rain affected race three with Ferdinand Habsburg (Carlin), both retiring from the race that was shortened due to weather conditions. He is fifth overall on the points table heading to the second round at the Hungaroring 2-3 June.
