Reigning Indy 500 champion, defending Pocono winner Will Power has a chance to win the (US) Triple Crown next weekend.
Power won the 102nd Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil in May after winning last year’s ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway. If the Team Penske driver is victorious in this year’s ABC Supply 500 on Sunday (August 19), he will become the first Indy car driver to win three consecutive 500-mile races since Al Unser captured the 1978 Triple Crown (wins at Indianapolis, Pocono and Ontario).
Power also won the 2016 race at Pocono, so will be trying for his third straight victory on the “Tricky Triangle.”
After 13 of 17 races in the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series season, Power is fourth in the championship standings, 87 points behind leader Scott Dixon. Power was also scheduled to drive in a Firestone tire test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval on Monday and will be available to answer questions about the testing.
Let’s not get confused with what the rest of the world regard as the Triple Crown – winning the Monaco F1 Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Only one person has achieved the triple and that is the late Graham Hill.
– Indianapolis 500 in 1966
– 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1972
– Monaco Grand Prix in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1969
