Thomas Randle made the perfect start to his S5000 career, crushing the field in a dominant display at The Bend Motorsport Park.

Randle, who only an hour before his race had his fingers jammed and injured in the door of a TCR car, but that could not stop him in today’s first qualifying race.

The Supercars young gun won the start, held the spot in the first corner scrum, and then ran mistake free at the front to claim the race from pole-sitter Anton de Pasquale and John Martin.

He set the quickest lap time of 1m41.2560s for an S5000 record and his winning margin was close to 10 seconds over his team-mate de Pasquale, who admits he has no answer yet to Randle’s speed.

Martin, a single-seater veteran, is having less fun with a car which he eventually used to fend off James Golding for the final podium place.

The only major incident in the 14-lap race was a spin by Tim Macrow, which dropped him back to eighth, as the thundering field of 10 noisy V8s lapped in a high-speed freight train.

Another qualifying race will be held tomorrow morning before the all-important feature race at 2:45pm local time.
