A tough FIA Formula F3 round for Marcus Armstrong has seen his one-point lead slip to 18 at the Silverstone circuit in the UK over the weekend. In the final third race, Jüri Vips (Motopark) claimed his second win of the season with Sacha Fenestraz (Carlin) second across the finish line. Jonathan Aberdein (Motopark) came third to round out the clean sweep of the overall podium for rookie drivers. Daniel Ticktum (Motopark), the FIA Formula 3 European Championship points’ leader, extended his margin in the drivers’ standings in spite of finishing only sixth. After a P6 and P5 in the opening two races, Armstrong retired out of the third race after a coming together with team mate Mick Schumacher on the opening lap.
Ticktum (Motopark) won the first race and took over the lead in the drivers’ standings. Sacha Fenestraz (Carlin) was second across the finish line from Enaam Ahmed (Hitech Bullfrog GP). Rookie driver Marcus Armstrong (PREMA Theodore Racing), who came to Silverstone as the points’ leader, finished sixth in the 16th race of the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season.
In the second race of the day, Mick Schumacher (PREMA Theodore Racing) laid the foundation for his second FIA Formula 3 European Championship race win. At the 5.901 kilometres long Silverstone Circuit, the German won from Jüri Vips (Motopark) and Jonathan Aberdein (Motopark), the latter scoring his maiden FIA Formula 3 European Championship podium finish. Armstrong finished fifth while Ticktum , who started the race as the points’ leader, finished eighth and thus maintained his lead in the drivers’ standings.
“We had a difficult start because of a procedural issue, but the pace was really good,” commented Armstrong. “We were always attacking the cars in front and it’s unfortunate that we couldn’t get a good start.
“In the end, we had a damaged tire so I had to be really careful. The same thing happened in race 2 when I had to drive as smoothly as possible. Anyway, the pace has been really good too so we have great potential.”
Next weekend drivers will battle for points and positions as the FIA Formula 3 European Championship season continues at Misano in Italy.
