S5000 on debut this weekend

A QUICK note on S5000, the big-banger open wheel category that has been three years in the gestation.

It commences this weekend and they’ve assembled a fantastic grid of 13 cars (only 14 exist) to race at Sandown, including 11-time Grand Prix winner Rubens Barrichello.

Even before the cars hit the track the drivers are reporting how tricky they are to drive and what a challenge they are presenting. Many are using words like ‘Balls’ to describe the commitment required to hustle these 560hp, 900kg modern interpretations of classic Formula 5000 racers.

Rubens Barricello will be one to watch this weekend

Of course, it’s exactly what it should be.

The cars are spectacular to watch and while the first round may be tentative – there aren’t many spares in existence yet – even one of these things running around on their own is worth the price of admission. 13? Stunning.

This is the first category to come along in years that has the potential to truly be something special – to be a potential headline act not only in Australia but in New Zealand and further beyond as well, if that is how it plays out.

If S5000 doesn’t draw people to the fence, then nothing will.

It will be live streamed this weekend, via thenationals.com.au. Even if your heart is more Tin-Top rather than Open-top, I’d suggest watching.. it could be a hell of a ride.
