Early drama in the first GB3 Championship race at Silverstone in the UK saw the championship lead change for the sixth time in 10 races. Pole sitter McKenzy Cresswell and Kiwi Louis SharpSharp fought it out on the opening lap, allowing the fast-starting John Bennett to slice through the middle of them on the approach to Stowe.
The Sharp and Cresswell battle continued on the second lap, going wheel to wheel again through Maggotts and Becketts, allowing Tymek Kucharczyk, who had climbed up to fourth, to get a run on them. The Polish driver attempted a move for third at Stowe, but made contact with Cresswell. Kucharczyk retired into the gravel while Cresswell slipped down the order.
Bennett survived a safety car restart to claim his third win of the year ahead of Sharp, who reclaimed the championship lead after all the drama. Jarrod Waberski finished behind the pair to claim his third podium of the season. Xie, Noah Ping and Schwarze completed the top-six.
The result means Sharp now holds a four-point lead over Bennett at the top of the standings, with Kucharczyk sliding down to third, but only five points further back.
Qualifying
Cresswell, at a circuit he’s always gone well at, was the driver to beat in qualifying this morning, recording a best lap of 1m52.703s right at the end of the session to put him two tenths of a second clear of Rodin’s Louis Sharp.
Hitech Pulse-Eight’s Gerrard Xie was third fastest ahead of Bennett with Elite’s Jarrod Waberski fifth ahead of Hitech’s then championship leader Tymek Kucharczyk.
Cresswell’s second-best time of 1m52.814s ensured he claimed pole for race two also, again ahead of Sharp with Bennett up to third ahead of Waberski, Kucharczyk and Elite’s Hugo Schwarze.
