The Red Bull duel continues

Two current Red Bull Junior drivers will compete in the 2020 Castrol Toyota Racing Series that gets underway at Highlands Motorsport Park, Cromwell, in the New Year (17-19 January 2020). Both Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda will drive for M2 Competition in the five consecutive round series. Both have been competing in Europe in 2019 in the FIA Formula 3 and Euroformula Open Champioships. Both competed in the 2019 Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix in November.

On paper, both drivers are the stand out talent for the grid of 20 TRS drivers as they are the most experienced in the field announced so far.

It will be advantage Lawson as this is his home territory and he knows the all the circuits well and is the current Toyota Racing Series champion.

Yuki Tsunoda

Lawson finished runner up in the 2019 Euroformula Open Series while Tsunoda was fourth. Both with the Motosport Team.

Both drivers were to have raced in the Formula European Masters series which was cancelled early in 2019. Red Bull had both drivers move to the FIA Formula 3 Championship with Lawson competing with MP Motorsport, finishing 11th overall and Tsunoda with Jenzer Motorsport, finishing ninth.

At the prestigious end of year Macau F3 Grand Prix, Lawson continued with MP Motosport finishing seventh while Tsunoda competed with Hitech Grand Prix finishing 11th.

New to both Lawson and Tsunoda will be the FT60 single seater which makes its debut in the Toyota Racing Series in 2020. It is quite different to the FIA F3 and Euroformula Open chassis’ that they are used to so while Lawson has home advantage, the FT60 will may prove to be a leveler in their rivalry.

Liam Lawson

While Lawson has home advantage, we may see a great battle for wins and podiums as both Red Bull Junior drivers look to beat the other. Whoever wins, it will be their advantage heading back to the Northern Hemisphere summer of racing.
