Australian Oscar Piastri claimed victory in a restarted FIA Formula 2 Championship Saudi Arabian Grand Prix feature race that was red flagged first due to a start-line shunt involving a stalled stalled Theo Pourchaire who was collected by an unsighted Enzo Fittipaldi.
Another crash, later in the race, between Olli Caldwell and Guilherme Samaia. again brought out the red-flag. Piastri was declared the winner on the count back rule, finishing ahead of teammate Shwartzman with Boschung third. Zhou claimed fourth in front of teammate Felipe Drugovich, Vips, Christian Lundgaard, Marcus Armstrong, Liam Lawson and Daniel Ticktum rounded out the points scorers.
Earlier, FIA F2 points leader Piastri took his fourth victory of the season in Sprint Race 2 with Trident’s Bent Viscaal second ahead of Piastri’s teammate, Robert Shwarztman, who moved up to second in the Championship standings ahead of Guanyu Zhou, with his sixth top-three finish this year.
Sprint Race 1 winner Marcus Armstrong was eager to build on his first victory, but the Kiwi was taken out before his defence had even got going. The DAMS’ driver was an innocent bystander in a four-car crunch heading into the first corner, with Clément Novalak, Alessio Deledda and Guilherme Samaia all getting caught up in the collision and forced out of the race.
The race ended under Safety Car conditions after Liam Lawson lost the rear of his Hitech at Turn 13 and spun into the barriers with two laps to go, meaning that all three of the podium-sitters from the opening race had retired.
The F2 championship will conclude at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix next weekend.
